Common Dental Emergencies

Fractured or Chipped Tooth from Trauma

Although unpredictable, teeth are fractured or chipped from falling or sports-related injuries. In baby and adult teeth, these are time-sensitive injuries. The sooner the Roanoke Pediatric Dentistry team and Dr. Ryan are able to evaluate the area, the less invasive treatment may be needed later (pulpotomy) or tooth decay.

If possible, please bring the tooth fragments to your visit. Sometimes we are able to bond (glue) the fragments back to the tooth. Please contact us right away.

Knocked-Out Baby Tooth

It is normal for your child to lose their front teeth (incisors) when they start elementary school. If the tooth was loose before the incident, it is not of concern. However, if your child prematurely knocked out (avulsed) a baby tooth, he or she should be evaluated by a dentist. If possible, please bring the tooth or tooth fragments to your visit.

Due to the risks of damaging the permanent tooth, do not reinsert the baby tooth. If you believe your child has lost a baby tooth due to trauma, we will fit you in right away. Please call Parkway Pediatric Dentistry at 540-989-3639.

We will advise you on the proper steps after we examine your child.

Knocked Out Permanent Tooth

The sooner a permanent tooth that was knocked out (avulsed) is reimplanted the higher success to save the avulsed tooth. Please call our team at Parkway Pediatric Dentistry as soon as possible and we will guide you through the steps needed. Always hold the avulsed tooth by the crown (chewing part) and not the root.

Do not rinse or place the avulsed tooth in water. The order preference in the transport medium is Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution, which is sometimes located at schools or athletic events, cold milk, or collecting saliva and placing the tooth in the cup.

What Should I Do If My Child Has A Toothache?

There are many reasons a child can have a toothache. The most common reasons are a large cavity that is near the nerve of the tooth or an infected tooth. This is a dental emergency and please give our office a call to have your child evaluated by Dr. Anderson or Dr. Ryan. There are many other causes for toothaches so it is important to have your child evaluated by a pediatric dentist to have the source of pain evaluated and addressed.
