Your Child’s First Visit at Parkway Pediatric Dentistry
Dental visits at a young age are very important for children’s oral health and overall health and wellness. Physical health and your child’s oral health are closely related, making early and positive dental habits very important for your child, just as they are for adults.
At Parkway Pediatric Dentistry, we provide friendly first dental visits for children in the Roanoke and New River Valley area. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends dental visits by age one and/or eruption of the first tooth.

The Importance of Early Examinations
Prevention of cavities is the most important tool in our tool chest! Early dental exams are very helpful for several reasons. First, they serve as important educational opportunities and experiences for young patients. Children often have anxieties and inherit fears of the dentist, but by seeing them as early as possible, a positive and comfortable association with the dentist can be established. Second, if there are any early concerns or signs of decay, we can typically address them when they are small.
Dental exams two times a year allows our pediatric dental specialist to establish benchmarks of your child’s oral health. Our comprehensive examination includes evaluation of tooth and jaw development, evaluation of oral hygiene with tips and trick for kids and parents to improve upon, and evaluation of gum health and tooth decay.
Our goal is to help you and your child leave our dental office feeling great and looking forward to the next time they can see their friends at Parkway Pediatric Dentistry!
Introduction to “Tools” and Your Child’s Dentist
After learning more about your child and family, we begin a gentle examination of your child’s smile. We strongly believe in the “tell, show, and do” approach. We sometimes utilize our friendly stuffed animals or show your child on their fingers how we will count their teeth. It is very important that we show your child everything so they know what expect. Next we introduce them to the mirror, suction and our toothbrush polisher. Before we start polishing the teeth, your child will have the opportunity to select what flavor “toothpaste” and fluoride varnish they prefer. Our main goal is to engage your child and teach them about everything in our office. Children are fascinated and will want to be involved in the processes. We also love to answer their questions!
A great relationship with your children’s dentist is an excellent first step toward a lifelong healthy smile. We work hard to earn your child’s trust and make them feel safe and comfortable throughout their visit with us.
