Laughing Gas
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is the most frequently used method for alleviating mild-to-moderate dental anxiety. It is a very safe and effective way to calm anxiety, raise a child’s pain threshold and help the time pass quicker than normal. Nitrous oxide is administered through a small mask that fits on your child’s nose. As the laughing gas begins to work, some kids do in fact laugh, but will also become calm. They will be awake and able to communicate with us.
At the end of the appointment, your child will resume breathing regular oxygen and the effects of nitrous oxide will disappear within a few minutes. Children can resume regular activity immediately after having laughing gas.
